Tip for Creating your Children's Book Library

A long time ago, I was a new mom wanting to collect books to one day have a library filled with good books to read to my children, share with others, and save for grandchildren. I began slowly, but starting with no books and each new book priced high (especially the good ones) my library wasn't growing to fast. I was told paperback books just won't last that well, but gave in to their cheap prices. ( I still buy some paperback.) I would splurg on a favorite or a book that was sure to be good, but then I discovered something new. I joined the Barnes & Noble Book Club* and while buying books took a chance on some used books that I could get free shipping on. The books came and I was pleasantly surprised at how NEW the "used" books looked.

Fast forward to now and I am a frequenter of Amazon and always click on the blue NEW or USED link under the amazon price. Many times I can get a used book for less than half the price of the original price and I have yet to receive a book I am displeased with the wear. I ordered many books this month and they ranged $4-$7 for classic hardbound books with shipping included.
Tip 1 for Amazon: I NEVER get anything less than USED- GOOD. Unless it is an out of print I NEED to have.
Tip 2 for Amazon: If you do buy from Amazon with Amazon as the seller and are a Prime Member, did you know you can get a $1 book credit every time you select a lower shipping speed. The best thing is that it doesn't always slow down my shipment. I know I am close to an Amazon distributing location so most of the time I still get it quick!

Another great option is Goodwill. Many of the used books I buy from Amazon come from Goodwill stores across the nation.

*Barnes & Noble Book Club is probably still a great option, and I do still go to their website to look for  hard to find books.

10 Amazing Children's Books- 1st Ed

I have been through many lists of "great" children's book. Some I've bought because they were repeated on so many sights only to find that my children could care less about them, and so could I. Where is my list of books every kid loves?! I do not want a list filled with astounding pieces of literature that have a deeper meaning behind them and are a masterpiece because it was the first of its kind to use a specific art genre. Those things are great, but only if they still engage my child and entice his or her imagination.
These are books that my children and I both love and know you will too:
1. Who Loves The Little Lamb by Lezlie Evans- This book is number one because it is my favorite, it is one of my children's favorites, and it reminds my children that I will always love them no matter what they do.

2. Animalia by Graeme Base - This book is wonderful. Pages filled with wonderful illustrations jammed packed with coordinated letter items/things covering the pages and tongue tying sentences (think Six slick sailors selling socks). My kids love playing "I spy" with this book and learning the names of new items.

3. Imogene's Antlers by David Small - I grew up loving this book and I am so thrilled that my kids like it today.

4. The Circus Ship by Chris Van Dusen - I discovered the book just this past year after someone else recommended it. It is about a Circus ship crashing and the animals swimming to an island off Maine and what happens to the animals. The rhyming has wonderful flow and it has a fun "eye-catching" game in it.

5. Small Pig by Arnold Lobel - This is such a clever fun story. The farmer's wife cleans the farm and the pig must search for mud, but he ends up in the wrong mud. It delights my young ones and is a great easy reader for my 6 yr old.

6. LMNOPeas by Keith Baker - This one is on some top lists and definitely should be. The pictures are bright and fun with clever little thing happening. It introduces lots of new vocabulary and gets kids thinking about who they are and what they want to be. A MUST!

7. Monster Be Good by Natalie Marshall - I love this one. The colors are bright and eye catching, my 2 year old loves it. It is a good simple manners book, and lets little ones know they are in charge of doing what is good. With a sweet little ending!

8.The Big Book of Berenstain Bears Beginner Books by Jan & Stan Berenstain - This includes The Bear's Picnic, The Bear's Vacation, The Bike Lesson, Bears in the Night, The Berenstain Bears and the Spooky Old Tree, and the best of them all The Berenstain Bears and the Missing Dinosaur Bone. It is the absolute best value to get the Missing Dinosaur and EVERY one of these books is a good classic.

9.Animal Opposites- a pop-up book by Petr Horacek - Great illustrations! Fun variety in lift pages and pop ups. It ends with a LARGE pull open. This book is so wonderful for getting kids attention and keeping it.
10. I am a Little Monkey by Francois Crozat - The images are realistic for drawings and the story humanizes the monkeys life. Nothing brilliant to me, but all my little ones have really liked it. My 2 year old LOVES looking through this book and having me read about mother monkey, grandpa, and little monkey getting rocked to sleep. (I am going to try another one of these Little Animal Stories soon and I'll let you know.)

Imagination Exploration is Only One Book Away

I love reading to my children. It awakens their imagination, improves language skills, and gives me a chance to snuggle even my wildest child. I have looked at many lists Top 100, Top 50, Best of All Time, and Top 10 of the Last 10 Years only to find many of the same books repeated. And some of them not very good. I want to share our favorite books with you. Many books that I love and most important that my children love as well. I'll give you my must haves, my boys must haves, as well as seasonal books I pull out throughout the year.
